What to Expect in Tech 2023

The technological landscape is constantly evolving, and every year, we see significant advancements that transform the way we live, work, and interact with the world around us. As we look ahead to 2023, it's clear that technology will continue to play a crucial role in shaping our future.

From artificial intelligence and space exploration to blockchain and the metaverse, there are numerous technological developments that will have a profound impact on our lives in the coming years. In this blog, we will explore some of the most exciting and promising technological improvements that we can expect to see in 2023 and beyond.

Space Exploration & The Commercial Space Age

Looking back at 2022, it's clear that technology gifted us with something truly extraordinary: the first images from the James Webb Telescope. These images, and the subsequent ones that followed, have opened up the very real possibility of finding life beyond our planet, even though it still seems impossible.

However, the most astonishing discovery from the James Webb Telescope in 2023 is the fact that our understanding of the timeline of the universe may be wrong. While scientists have long believed that the big bang occurred around 13.7 billion years ago and that the James Webb Telescope would capture light from roughly 13.5 billion years ago, what was captured was completely unexpected. According to Joel Leja, assistant professor of astronomy and astrophysics at Penn State University, "We expected only to find tiny, young, baby galaxies at this point in time, but we've discovered galaxies as mature as our own in what was previously understood to be the dawn of the universe." This could mean our universe is quite older than previously imagined.

The year 2021 saw a significant shift in the space industry, with commercial businesses such as Blue Origin, SpaceX, and Virgin Galactic leading the race for space exploration. This marked the beginning of a new era in space exploration that is not limited to government-funded expeditions. With the advent of space tourism, millionaires can now purchase tickets to travel beyond our planet. As technology advances and becomes more cost-effective, it is expected that space travel will become even more accessible to a larger number of people. In fact, Space Perspective is planning to launch a space balloon in 2024 that will allow individuals to travel to space for a ticket price of $125,000, making it a slightly more affordable option for space enthusiasts.

AI For Everyone

Towards the end of 2022, a groundbreaking technology was released that has the potential to revolutionize the way we interact with artificial intelligence - ChatGPT. This powerful generative AI model is available for anyone to use and has already made significant strides in its capabilities. The latest release of ChatGPT, version 4.0, is estimated to be 100 times more powerful than its predecessor, version 3.0.

In fact, OpenAI, the creators of ChatGPT, tested both models by having them take the Bar Exam. While ChatGPT 3.0 scored in the 10th percentile, ChatGPT 4.0 scored in the 90th percentile - a remarkable improvement.

OpenAI has released another fascinating technology called Dall-E, which enables anyone to create any image they can imagine with just a simple sentence. Images are generated in mere seconds, and the possibilities are endless. Here are some examples of images I created using Dall-E: #1 A watercolor of a lonely robot holding balloons, #2 our galaxy in a crystal ball #3 a renaissance painting of a robot petting a cat (nailed it). Best of all, not only can you see the depth and variety of images Dall-E can create, these were also all free.

The Rise of NFTs, The Growth of DeFi, and The Exploration of CBDCs

Over the next few years, we can expect to witness significant advancements in blockchain technology. One of the most noteworthy developments in recent times is the surge of NFTs, also known as non-fungible tokens, which are unique digital tokens that represent ownership of a specific asset like digital art, music, or collectibles. NFTs have gained immense popularity in the past year, with some selling for millions of dollars at auction. For instance, digital artist Pak's latest creation, The Merge, was sold for a staggering US$91.8 million on Nifty Gateway, setting a new world record for the most expensive piece of art sold by a living artist.

Notably, it's not just artists who are creating NFTs; large brands are also exploring ways to engage with and create NFTs. In January, Porsche launched its Web3 initiative, offering a unique 7,500-piece NFT collection that allows buyers to own a one-of-a-kind digital Porsche. Balmain is also set to introduce the first fashion NFT-based membership program, "The Balmain Thread," on the eco-friendly XRP Ledger.

Decentralized finance (DeFi) is another trend gaining popularity, which might soon eliminate the need to rely on banks or financial institutions to borrow money. DeFi refers to a set of financial applications developed on top of blockchain networks that allow for decentralized and permissionless financial services. The DeFi space is expanding at a rapid pace, offering new opportunities for users to borrow, lend, and invest in cryptocurrencies.

Moreover, several countries are exploring the creation of CBDCs or central bank digital currencies, which are digital versions of fiat currencies issued and backed by central banks. CBDCs could potentially offer several benefits, including increased financial inclusion and more efficient cross-border transactions.

Neo Designers: Fashion in The Metaverse

During the 2000s, many of us were unwittingly exploring the original metaverse through the virtual chat platform Habbo Hotel. As a teenager, Habbo was the go-to place on the internet where you could connect with friends from around the globe, design your own rooms, and trade furniture and other virtual goods. Habbo remains popular among teenagers today, still boasting its retro pixel-art style.

Fast forward to the present, companies like Decentraland and EveryRealm, have emerged as the modern-day equivalents of Habbo Hotel. In Decentraland, users can own digital land, construct their own establishments, and design and sell virtual fashion items and other belongings using cryptocurrency. Some are even generating income from their creations or by selling tickets to events, bringing to mind the world of Ready Player One. According to McKinsey, the Metaverse could generate up to 5 trillion dollars by 2030.

Decentraland is currently hosting its second annual Metaverse Fashion Week (MVFW23), which includes prominent brands such as Dolce & Gabbana, Tommy Hilfiger, COACH, adidas, DKNY, and Vogue.

As more brands begin to interact with the metaverse, it is likely that we will see a wide range of businesses exploring its potential. Even those who may not be able to afford luxury items in the physical world could possibly do so and customize them to their liking in the Metaverse.

In conclusion, the technological advancements we have witnessed in recent months have been nothing short of remarkable. With the release of ChatGPT4 and Dall-E, the possibilities of what we can achieve with AI and machine learning have expanded exponentially. Similarly, the rise of commercial space travel has made the idea of exploring the cosmos more accessible than ever before.

Additionally, NFTs have revolutionized the way we think about digital ownership, fashion, and art. Cryptocurrency also has the potential to change our relationship with money. As we continue to push the boundaries of technology, we can only imagine what new frontiers we will explore and what possibilities we will uncover. It is an exciting time to be alive, and the future holds endless promise for those who embrace the possibilities of technology.
